The History of LEGO
If you've ever stepped on a LEGO brick in the middle of the night, you know that they're sturdy little things. But did you know that LEGO blocks are actually based on a centuries-old building technique? It's true! In this article, we'll explore the history of LEGO and how it became one of the most popular toys in the world.
The earliest predecessor to the modern LEGO brick was invented in ancient Egypt around 2,500 BCE. These so-called "hieroglyph bricks" were used by architects and scribes to create temples, tombs, and other structures. Hieroglyph bricks continued to be used throughout the Roman Empire and medieval Europe—though by then, they were made from wood or stone instead of Nile clay.
In 1934, Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen started making wooden toys in his workshop. He named his company LEGO, based on the Danish words "leg godt," which mean "play well." In 1947, LEGO began producing plastic toys, which quickly became popular. It wasn't until 1949 that LEGO began producing the interlocking blocks that we know and love today
LEGO blocks really took off in 1958 with the introduction of the LEGO System of Play. This system allowed children (and adults!) to build complex structures with LEGO bricks. In 1978, LEGO released its first minifigure—a small plastic figure with movable arms and legs—which added a whole new dimension to LEGO play. Today, there are over 4 billion minifigures in circulation!
LEGO Themes
Every LEGO fan has their favourite LEGO theme. Themes are groups of similar sets that are centred around a particular topic, such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Architecture or many others. In other words, LEGO themes are essentially LEGO product lines. But how many LEGO themes are available to collect?
There are currently 42 available LEGO themes in production as of 2022. There have been a further 109 LEGO themes in the past, which have already been discontinued. Of course, this number changes frequently, as The LEGO Group continues to expand its product line-up and explore new audiences to bring into the LEGO family by creating new and exciting themes.
